==The Early Swedish Settlers==
Today, the old Christdala Church and Cemetery are a monument and memorial to the significant contributions made by a small group of hardy Swedish settlers in Rice County, Minnesota in the latter half of the 19th century. They left their homes in Sweden to settle in the New World where they faced danger, tragedy, hardship and loneliness. They also prospered, built a simple church and made lasting contributions to their community and the broader American civilization. They were hard-working, well-educated and devout and quickly became a part of the greater American "melting pot." A member of the Christdala Swedish community remembered, "West of Millersburg we have Irish, French and Bohemian settlements, Norwegians to the north and Germans to the south. All good neighbors." In 1928 an early Swedish settler recounted the many changes he had witnessed since coming to America: "Sowing of seed was by hand, the wheat harvested by cradle; binding was by hand, and then came the mower, then the reaper, then the binder. Oxen were replaced by tractors, oil wicks in grease were replaced with candles and then by kerosene lamps."
